Things You Should Do Right After You Move In

We all know that moving homes or office spaces can be an additional headache during an already transitional time. Luckily, moving pros like Crown Moving of St. George UT are here to assist you in every way possible. Let’s take a look at a few things to keep in mind when moving so that you can avoid as many potential roadblocks as possible and enjoy an easy move-in period.

Firstly, and it may seem obvious, but you should provide your family and friends with your new address so there are no disruptions in communication. A group email or text message should suffice in most cases, and people will feel appreciated that you kept them in the loop during this transitional moving period. If you plan on having a housewarming party, then it is perfectly acceptable to wait until you send out RSVP invitations to inform guests of your new location. As the holidays season draws nearer, remember that you can send out holiday well wishes earlier than you normally would to inform friends and family of your change of address.

For work-related contacts, it is a professional courtesy to provide several weeks’ (2-4) notice for accounting and records related purposes. If you are leaving the area and your job altogether, then this notice goes a long way to allowing them to find, hire and train a new person so they experience as little disruption as possible. This is just simply good form in the professional world.

If you are leaving a rental property, make sure you review your lease and speak with the landlord or leasing office to be sure that you have covered all of your bases there. Most leases will have stipulations about giving notice and/or penalties for breaking your lease. Once you have all the facts straight, it is a good idea to write a letter to them including your move out date and be sure to include your new address.

Another pair of major considerations is the Post Office and utility services. Updating your address with the post office is quick and easy, and may be accomplished online (with accompanying $1 fee), through an official postcard or in person at any Post Office. Your mail will be forwarded for up to a year after your moving date, while magazine and newspaper subscriptions will be covered up to 60 days. As for utilities, it stands to reason that you will need all of your existing utilities at your new location the same as before, so inform your electric, gas water, telephone, cable and internet providers in advance and they will advise you on how to best navigate the transition. In many instances, they may be able to continue services for you at your new place without a gap in service or paying for additional services after you’ve already moved out.
