5 Packing Tips

Packing can be one of the most stressful aspects of moving. Trying to figure out how everything you own is going to fit in boxes and packed in the moving truck on time can sometimes seem implausible. To help alleviate the pressure of packing here are some simple tips that can help make the process go smoother.

What to Pack First

There are two things that you are going to want to pack first: a suitcase of clothes and personal items you are going to need during the move, and a box of items you will need first when you get to your new house. When packing your suitcase to remember that you might not be able to access, or unpack your clothes and other things for a couple days after you move in. So make sure to pack a few extra things just in case. Find a clear box to pack the things you are going to need first, that way you can easily see what is in it, and not accidentally lose track of it during the move.

Be Prepared

Before you even start the packing process make sure you have everything that you will need to complete packing. Go to the store and buy bubble wrap, tape, boxes, plastic wrap, etc., whatever you are going to need to keep your belongings safe in the move. There is nothing worse than spending a lot of time packing and then showing up to your new house to find out your things broke during the move. Taking the time before will be worth it when you get to your new house.

Make a Packing List

Before you start packing random boxes here and there make a checklist. Determine which room you are going to pack first and then the order to pack them in. Packing random boxes in different rooms can actually slow down the process in the long run, so plan it out ahead of time. Also make a list for what rooms you are going to pack each day, this will help you make the most of your time, and ensure that you will have everything packed by the time you need to.

Label Everything

Make sure every single box is labeled with what the contents are and where it will go in the new house. This will allow you to place the boxes in their correct room straight from the moving truck, instead of having to temporarily place them somewhere until you figure out which room it is going to go in. Packing everything can always be a pain, but unpacking it is often more of pain. Just simply label everything and it will make it less painful.

Make the Best Use of Space

When packing don’t feel the need to put everything you own in a moving box. Make the most of your own belongings. Use baskets, bags, totes, etc., to pack other items in. There is no reason to have a box filled with other boxes or bags. You can also use less space by vacuum sealing bags. Flexible things, like clothes, can easily be vacuum sealed and take up less than half of the space they would have. If you are vacuum sealing things that you aren’t currently using then it makes it even easier when you get to your new house because you can put them directly in storage.
