8 Things to Do When You Move in

Moving is always a stressful experience, even if you do have Crown Moving taking care of the heavy lifting in that southern Utah heat.

But there is a moment when the truck is gone and all the boxes are sitting in the quiet house that you realize this is your new home. You can see the new beginning right in front of you. It’s the best part of moving.

However, there are a few things that you should take care of before unpacking every box. Even though the decorating, unpacking and settling down are important, safety is key in making sure you love where you live.

1. Change the locks. You never know if the previous owners still have keys or what crazy neighbors might have made a copy of that one key hidden under the garden gnome. Make sure you and your family are the only people who have access to your home.

2. Wipe out the cabinets. Who knows what food remains, glass shards or toothpaste gunk was left behind? Wipe inside and out and replace any liner or contact paper if needed.

3. Clean the carpets. Before the furniture comes in, get your home off to a fresh start by steam cleaning the carpets. You can rent a steam cleaner or have professionals take care of it before you arrive.

4. Check for leaks in plumbing. Even though the home inspector should take care of this before you ever close on the house, you still shouold take the time to double-check. Finding water damage behind that massive entertainment center a week later is never a good thing.

5. Get rid of those pests. Mice, spiders, roaches, bats and other critters could still be lurking around the house. There are lots of ways you can take care of this yourself, but you can also have a pest control service make a visit.

6. Figure out your circuit breaker. If the breaker isn’t already labeled, grab a friend or family member and yell between floors to figure out which fuses affect which rooms. Walkie talkies may be helpful in this moment.

7. Locate the main water valve. Figure out how to turn it on and off in case of any emergencies or plumbing problems.

8. Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Figure out where you might need additional alarms and which ones need new batteries. You may want to wear a pair of earplugs if you have more than one alarm to test.
