Packing Your Home Done Right

Moving can be an extrememly tedious task, especially packing up your home. Well let’s give you one word to work off of as you begin to pack up everything: organization. If you start and finished with a sense of organization, your moving experience will be a lot easier.

Packing

Start Small

Don’t procrastinate! No one is going to pack for you. Well, we can always come out and help, but even that takes some initial effort.

When a moving date is set, too many people tend to say to themselves, “I’ll get around to packing a few weeks before the move.” Then a few weeks before you have to move, you look around and say, “Oh, I don’t have that much stuff. I’ll start in a few days.” Finally, the week of the move comes along, and you suddenly realize your cabinets, closets, dresser drawers, and attic are all completely full. Your heart sinks, and you start to panic.

Start out small in the beginning, even a few months before you plan on moving out.

Make Piles

Separate things into little piles. Start cleaning out those cabinets and closets, and put things into boxes one by one. Maybe you can use one closet to start storing those boxes to keep everything out of the way. Then, the day of the move, you have an organized pile of boxes in one place.

You could even clear out one room of the house and use that room to hold all your organized “piles” of boxes and furniture.

Protection

Make sure you aren’t stacking anything too heavy on top of fragile items, especially if your boxes will be sitting there for a while.

Use packing peanuts and other packing materials. Rolled up newspaper always helps. This will minimize the chances of something breaking as the items in boxes have less room to move around.

Use a few strands of tape across the bottom folds of your boxes for support. If you live in a humid area, make sure you’re using durable tape that won’t peel on its own.

This also might be a great time to dust your furniture as you move and take it apart. Once you move things out of one room and into another, you’ll have more space to start cleaning up.
